Varsity boys lose first of the season

The fourth-seeded Oran High School boys varsity team tasted defeat for the first time last night, dropping a heartbreaking 55-48 overtime loss to fifth-seeded Notre Dame Regional High School.

The Eagles trailed 16-12 after one and 24-23 at the break.  They took a 38-33 lead heading into the fourth, thanks in part to a desperation three from past half court at the buzzer by Ty Johnson.  Oran was not able to capitalize on that momentum, however, as the Bulldogs hit the front end of a one-and-one with 2.7 seconds remaining to knot the score at 45.  Notre Dame rebounded the miss but could not get a shot off before the end of regulation.

Notre Dame controlled the extra four minutes, outscoring the Eagles 10-3 to claim the victory in the hard-fought game.

Jacob Shoemaker led all scorers with 19.  He had two treys and was 5 of 6 from the line.  Todd Priggel added 12 including a three-pointer.

Ty Johnson finished with eight, including that buzzer-beater and was also 5 of 6 at the charity stripe.  Tyson Goodale had six and hit all four of his free throws.  Langdon Scheeter hit a trey to round out the scoring.

Oran hit 21 of 28 at the line for 75%.  They are now 8-1 and will face conference foe, number-nine seeded Chaffee today at 3 pm in a fifth-place consolation semifinal.
