Eagles eke out win at Advance

On Thursday, the Oran High School baseball team traveled to Advance to take on the rival Hornets, for the Eagles fourth game in a row, and managed a comeback 5-3 win.  In years past, these two were district rivals, but no more as Advance has been elevated to Class 2.

The home team scored two in the first.  They used a lead-off walk followed by two singles and an error.  It could have been worse, but Oran turned a double play after a runner on second tried to advance to third on a ground ball to shortstop, Ty Johnson and was caught in a rundown and the batter was out trying to advance to second.  The play went 6-5-6-5-4.

Oran got those two back in the third, Luke Patterson led off with a walk.  Jacob Shoemaker reached on a bunt single.  Todd Priggel got on with a fielder's choice but it forced Shoemaker at second for the first out, but moved Patterson to third.  Patterson scored on Kole Simms sac fly to center. Priggel moved to second on a Johnson walk and scored on Kaden Hargrove's single. Hargrove was out trying to advance to second.

The Hornets regained the lead in their half with a lead-off walk, an error and a sacrifice fly.

In the fifth, Oran tied the score.  Shoemaker walked with one out and was once again forced at second after an infield ground ball by Priggel who reached base.  Simms then tripled to deep center field to knot it at 3.

In the top of the sixth, Dawson Menz wrangled a one-out walk and Conner Kern laid down a sac bunt up the third baseline.  Menz went all the way to third after the Hornets left the base uncovered, but he was not able to score.

Both teams had gone to their pens to start the sixth, for Oran Johnson went to the mound. He struck out the first two he faced before walking the next.  After falling behind 2-0, including a wild pitch that allowed the runner to advance to second, the Eagles decided to intentionally walk the batter.  Johnson then, on a 2-2 count, was able to induce a comebacker to end the threat.

In the seventh, for the Eagles, the first two were retired, but then back-to-back-to-back doubles by Simms, Johnson and Hargrove scored two.

During the bottom half, Johnson once again struck out the first two before alowing a walk.  This time the next batter grounded back to the pitcher to end the game.

Kern went the first five on the mound and did not figure in on the decision. He allowed three runs but only one earned on four hits.  He walked three and struck out three.  Johnson (4-0) picked up the win in relief, going two innings.  He did not allow a hit, while walking three and striking out four.

Hargrove had three hits on the day and drove in two, Simms had pair of hits and runs driven in.  Shoemaker also had two hits on the day.

Coach Joe Bickings said, "[It was a] great come from behind win for our baseball team.  We made some errors that helped them out and they took advantage of them.  I think all three of their runs came off an error.  I told them after the game that one reason for our success last year in the playoffs was because we didn't really walk anyone and didn't commit many errors.  We can't give good teams extra outs and we can't give good teams free passes.  With that being said, our kids never gave up and Connor Kern pitched a heck of a game.  For a freshman to throw like that is a pretty dang good job.  Ty came in right behind him and shut the door.  It's good to see him come right back out there and compete after the bad outing he had against Malden.  Our kids also had timely hitting and made the correct plays down the stretch."

The Eagles improved to 7-3 and will host conference foe Chaffee on Monday at 4:30.  There will also be some jayvee action that day.
