The Oran High School boys basketball teams hosted the Risco Tigers last night. It was the first game of the year for the junior varsity and its 20 players.
Risco only had five on its roster.
All 20 Eagles made it to the floor and 13 scored in a 68-25 victory.
Leading the way was Kolton Payne with 10.
Seth Cauble and Samuel Shoemaker each added nine and both hit a trey. Robby Menz and Camdyn Triblett had eight apiece and Menz hit two from beyond the arc. Diesel Cato had six points, Riley Schlosser five, including a three-pointer, and Nick Romas had four. Landon Cochran, Noah Mitchem and Owen Spane each added a field goal. Connor Watkins added a free throw to round out the scoring.
Coach Joe Bickings said, "It was a pretty good way to start the year. I felt like we got after it on the press early on and got steals to create some easy baskets. We also moved the ball around fairly well on offense as 13 different players scored. There were some times that we didn't communicate very well on the defensive end and we have to do a better job of that if we want to be a competitive team. Overall for the night, I was fairly pleased."
In the nightcap, the Eagles trailed 5-0 and then tied it at 7 and 10 before taking a 13-10 lead about midway through the first quarter and led 23-15 after one on their way to an 87-57 victory. The Eagles were up 49-32 at the intermission. But in the third quarter, the Tigers cut the margin to eight, 56-48, with about two minutes left in the frame. Oran, however, went on a 9-0 run to close the period and 31-9 the rest of the way to pick up the 30-point win.
Tyson Goodale led all scorers with 30 points. He had two treys. Todd Priggel, despite being saddled with foul trouble and seeing limited playing time, finished with a triple-double. He had 17 points, 11 rebounds and 11 assists in 22 minutes of playing time. Cooper Priggel hit five of 12 from beyond the arc for his 15 points. Langdon Scheeter was the fourth Eagle in double-figures with 11. He hit one three-pointer.
Samuel Shoemaker had six, including a trey. Ty Johnson, who also had to deal with foul trouble, had four points. Nick Romas and Diesel Cato added two apiece.
As a team, they were 26-46 (56.5.%) from inside the arc. From beyond they hit 9 of 23 (39.1%). From the line, they were 8 of 13 for 61.5 percent.
Both teams had 33 rebounds. The Eagles forced 24 turnovers and committed 12.
Coach Joe Shoemaker said, "Risco is always well-coached and plays hard and this year was no different. Tyson ended up with 30 points on the night and I thought everyone did a good job of finding the hot hand. Todd ended up with a triple-double in limited playing time due to foul trouble. We need to rebound better on the defensive end we only rebounded 50% of their misses. We will work on this in practice and do a better job in the future. "
The Eagles travel to Scott City Friday to take on the Rams at 6 pm.
