This is the third update of our local athletes and their endeavors over the summer.

Two key freshmen from last spring's Eagle team were teammates over the summer.  Layne Johnson and Clay Sauceda were also key members for the Chaffee Red Devils junior Babe Ruth squad that finish 3rd in their state tournament that was held in Boonville, Mo.

Sauceda batted .578 on the season with a .663 on base percentage.  He had 12 doubles, 2 triples and 3 home runs.

Johnson batted .302 and had a .400 on base percentage.  He connected for 2 doubles, 1 triple and 1 home run.

On the mound, the lefty Johnson totaled 41 2/3 innings pitched.  During that time he struck out 59 while walking only 6.  He ended the season with a minuscule  0.33 ERA.

Although Eagles fans only saw him behind the plate during the high school
season, Sauceda logged 16 2/3 innings on the mound.  He recorded 22 strikeout and walked 9.  His ERA was also less than 1 at 0.83

Their Chaffee team finished 31-4 and was 18-0 in their league.
