The Oran Junior High School girls basketball teams won their games tonight defeating Cape Central.
The 7th graders trailed early but came back for a 32-27 win, while the 8th grade jumped out early and never looked back, doubling up the Tigers, 38-19.
In the first game of the evening, Oran was down 9-8 after one quarter but rallied to to take a 16-14 lead at the intermission. The Eagles extended the lead to 5 after three, 25-20 and the teams each scored 7 in the final six minutes.
Mallory Lowes led all scorers with 20. Alyssa Spane had 6 points, Hope Woodfin added 4 including 2-2 from the free throw line. Hannah Boshell chipped in 2 for Oran, improvimg its record to 3-3.
Free throws proved to be the difference in the game and this time it was a positive. The Eagles shot 42% on the night going 6-14, while Cape Central was only 1-5. A 5 point differential at the line was the final margin of victory.
Coach Ethan Evans said, "It was the first time the 7th grade played against man to man defense and they did a great job of not being intimidated and attacking the goal. Mallory Lowes did a good job taking control of the game from a leadership stand point."
The night's second game saw the home team jump out to a 12-2 first quarter lead and it was 16-4 at the half. Oran expanded its lead to 33-10 after the third and won going away by 19.
Samantha Welter claimed high-point honors scoring 17. She hit 4 fields goals from beyond the arc. Heather Gosche scored 10, Lyndsi Bryant added 5. Taylor Lowes had 4 points while Mallory Lowes chipped in 2. The eighth grade is now 5-2.
"Cape is much improved from last year but we got off to a quick start to take control of the game. If we could have made free throws we would have blown the game wide open. Samantha stretched the defense out by knocking down some 3's and opened things up around the goal," said Coach Evans.
Oran shot only 32% from the charity stripe hitting just 6-19.
The junior high girls will be back in action tomorrow night as they travel to Scott County Central for a 6 pm tip off.
