HSGB: Eagles open Scott-Miss with sweep

The Oran High School girls basketball teams opened their conference seasons on the road last night, picking up two victories over the Scott County Central Bravettes.  The varsity doubled up SCC 70-35 while the  jv won its game 31-28.

It was two freshman that led the way for the Eagles as they improved to 2-0.

Jessie Long and Leah Cauble both had double-doubles.  Long scored 26 and grabbed 13 rebounds, while Cauble poured in 24, including 9 points from beyond the arc, and dished out 15 assists. Cauble also had 5 steals.

Oran jumped out to a quick lead at 7-1 at the 5:39 mark before a Scott County time out.  The Bravettes cut the lead to 8-6 before the Eagles went on a 7-2 run to close out the quarter with a 15-8 advantage.

Oran took control in the second as Long scored 12 of her team's 23 and the Eagles were up by 20, 38-18.

The home team tried to make a run in the third quarter, as they scored the first 4 points, but then it was the dynamic duo that took over as both Long & Cauble hit 4 field goals.  Two of Cauble's were from long range and by the time the game reached the final period it was 60-24, setting up a mercy-rule running-clock for the final 8 minutes.

Brianna Stause also reached double-digit scoring with 10.  She had 2 treys and added 5 assists.  Ashlyn McIntosh had 5 points and 9 rebounds. Tatum May, who was saddled with foul trouble all evening, finished with 3 points.

Head Coach Ethan Evans commented, "The effort both offensively and defensively was outstanding. Scott County is a good team that is well coached that will get after you for 32 minutes. We did a good job of pushing the tempo and finishing shots."

Oran shot 46% from the field (31-68) overall, including 42% from beyond the arc (5-12) after going 2-12 the night before.  From the line, they hit 3 of 10 for 30%.

Junior Varsity

The younger Eagles picked up their first win of the season.  Oran jumped out to a 15 point half-time lead and then had to hold on to withstand a Scott County Central comeback for the 3 point win.

Katelyn Streeter scored 10, Kenzie Graviett had 9, including the first 4 of the game. Claire Ramsey had 7, while Madison Ramsey added 5 including one three-pointer.

Oran hit 4 for 15 from the free throw line (27%).

Afterwards, Coach Evans said, "I was pleased with the way the girls bounced back from their 1st game. They moved the ball extremely well and really stepped it up on the defensive end."

The varsity Eagles will have almost 2 weeks off until they face Scott City in the Chaffee Invitational on Monday, December 7th.
