HSGB: Oran turns tide on Green Wave

It wasn't always pretty but it was a win to open the season for the Oran High School girls basketball
team last night as they hosted the Malden Green Wave.  The Eagles came out on top 54-31.

Oran never trailed in the contest, leading 13-7 after 1 and 30-16 at the half.  The lead was up to 25 heading into the final quarter, 49-24 on their way to the 23 point win.

Freshman Leah Cauble scored 18 including one trey, and dished out 6 assists.  She was also 5-5 from the free throw line.  Fellow freshman, Jesse Long recorded a double-double with 11 points and 11 rebounds.  Senior Ashlyn McIntosh just missed out on the same feat with 10 points and 9 rebounds. Senior Tatum May added 8 points and 6 steals. Freshman Claire Ramsey was 2-2 from the field for her 4 points and junior Brianna Stause hit one from beyond the arc to account for her 3.

As a team, the Eagles were 20-45 from inside the arc for 44.4% and 2-12 from beyond for 16.7%.  At the free throw line they hit 50%  with an 8-16 performance.

Head Coach Ethan Evans said, "Overall I was pleased with the way we played especially defensively. We had a chance to really put the game out of reach but got in some foul trouble and lacked that killer instinct. We are pretty young and some nerves showed especially early."

In the first game, the Green Wave pounded Oran by a score of 44-4.  Madison Ramsey hit a three in the first quarter and Megan Henson hit a free throw in the second for the only Eagle points.

According to Coach Evans, "We have to come out with more defensive intensity. We had a lot of shots that just didn't go in but we have to rebound and get after it better than we did."

Both teams will be back in action this evening when they travel to Scott County Central for their first conference match-ups of the season. Game time is scheduled for 7 pm.
