For the second time in less than two weeks the Oran High School girls basketball team faced the power-house Saxony Lutheran girls team.
The last time they met was during the championship game of the Delta New Year Tournament on January 18. The Crusaders won that match-up by 22, 52-30.
Last night, when the Eagles hosted, the result was the same but the margin was smaller. This time, Oran was on the short-end of a 14 point decision, 49-35. The junior varsity lost 46-22.
The varsity started out slow, falling behind 15-4 after one. From there on, however, the teams played basically even.
Both teams scored 14 in the second; Saxony won the third 13-7 and the Eagles out-paced the Crusaders in the fourth 10-7 for the final totals.
This morning Head Coach Ethan Evans told the blog, "This game was much like the last one. We let them go on a run early and then played mostly even after that. The effort defensively was there but we needed more aggression on the offensive end of the floor."
Leah Cauble led all scorers with 22 including 2 from long range. She also had 2 assists.
Brianna Stause netted 8. She also had 2 treys. Tatum May and Claire Ramsey had 2 points each. Jessie Long added a single tally and grabbed a team-high 9 rebounds.
Junior Varsity
In the opener, the junior varsity was limited to 8 points through the first three periods and was trailing 40-8 heading into the final 7 minutes. Oran was able to cut the margin in the fourth to the final 24 points.
Coach Evans said, "I thought we played timid for the first 3 quarters. In the 4th a couple of girls stepped up and played well offensively. If we play like that we will win some games."
Katelyn Streeter had 6 to lead the Eagles, MacKenzie Graviett added 5 and Megan Henson chipped in 3. Claire Ramsey and Madison Ramsey also added three, both scoring from beyond the arc. Madison Graviett had 2 points.
The Eagles are now 12-2 at the varsity level and the jv is 3-3.
Both teams will be back in action on Thursday when they host conference foe Delta at 6 pm.
