JV advances in S-MC

The Oran High School boys junior varsity basketball team barely escaped an upset last night against the 5th seeded Oak Ridge Blue Jays.  The 4th seeded Eagles won 50-47 in over-time.

The Eagles fell behind early but managed a 2 point lead after one.  By half-time, the lead was 5.

During the third quarter, the Jays trimmed the margin to 1.  Just before the final buzzer Oak Ridge hit a three-pointer to send the game into the extra frame.

During that final two minute period, Oran hit 6 of 8 from the free throw line and picked up the win.

Coach Joe Bickings said, "We played hard for the most part but we didn't play very smart.  They would run the same dribble/drive offense every time down the floor.  There were times we would talk and did a good job of keeping them in front of us and then the next trip we wouldn't talk and either leave a shooter open or let them get to the hole.  Communication helps eliminates a lot of problems in every sport and we just have to do a better job of it.  I feel like although it was a little bit of an ugly win for us, it was still a win where we can learn a few things from the game.  In every tournament you just want to advance and move on to the next opponent."

Bradley Brooks topped the winners with 19 points.  9 of those came during the 4th and overtime periods.  Drew Reischman had 10.

Ben Fox added 7, Joey Phillips and Denver Elfrink chipped in 5.  William Kluesner and Calen Read each tallied 2.

Peyton McVay and Jon Shipley both played, but neither scored.

The Eagles were 9-15 from the charity stripe for 60%.

They improved to 4-8 on the season and will take on top-seeded East Prairie on Thursday at 4 pm.
