Eagles stung by Hornets

The Oran High School boys basketball teams closed out the regular season last night by dropping two games at Advance against the Hornets.  The junior varsity lost 58-30, while the varsity fell 69-51.

The Eagles started slow, they were down 8-0 and ended up on the short end of a 10-5 score at the end of the first eight minutes.

Oran was able to pick up the pace in the second, out scoring Advance 26-20, to take a 31-30 lead into the locker room at half time.

After the break, the Hornets took control of the game as they out pointed the Eagles 22-8 in the third and 17-12 in the fourth to pick up the 18 point win.

Max Priggel led all scorers with 22, including 3 treys.  Jacob Shoemaker scored 11.  He also hit 3 from beyond the arc.

Layne Johnson added 7, including 1 three.  Garrison Mangels tallied 6.  Cole Priggel chipped in 3 and Preston Hahn had a field goal.

Luke Barnes, Wyatt Kinney, Drew Reischman and Blake Schlitt played but did not score.

Oran was only 4 of 9 from the line for 44%.

Junior Varsity

The younger Eagles could never get things clicking last night as they fell behind 31-14 at the half and were out scored 27-16 in the second half.

Ben Fox scored 15 to lead Oran.  He was 5 of 6 from the free throw line.

Drew Reischman scored 4.  Bradley Brooks and Denver Elfrink both added 3.  William Kluesner and Calen Read each scored 2.  Kluesner got his by going  2 for 2 from the charity stripe.  Peyton McVay added a single tally.

Avery Mitchem, Joey Phillips and Jon (Downtown) Shipley saw action but did not get into the scoring column.

The Eagles were 10 of 17 on free throws for 59%.

They finish their season with a 6-11 record and 3-3 in conference play.  The jayvee claimed 2nd place in the Advance Junior Varsity Tournament and finished 4th in the Scott-Mississippi Conference JV Tournament.

The varsity closed out the regular season at 13-13 and 4-3 in conference.  They will take a 4 game losing streak into the the district tournament at Richland, which begins Saturday.  Oran will face Delta at 2:30pm.

If the seeds hold up, the Eagles, the 2 seed, will have a chance to avenge last night's loss in the district championship game against the number 1 seed Hornets.
