Softball falls in opener

The Oran High School girls softball team played for the first time since October of 2014 as they made their spring season debut yesterday at Scott City.  The Eagles lost 4-2.

Oran scored first by plating an unearned during the top of the second.  Jessie Long reached on a throwing error and advanced to second on a passed ball. Sydney Kern sacrificed Long to third and Hannah Scherer drove her home with a ground out.

The Eagles had made an excellent defensive play during the bottom of the 1st to have the opportunity to score first.  With two-outs, the Rams hit a drive down the line in right field, Kenzie Graviett retrieved the ball and fired it into Brianna Stause who in turn hit Jessie Long at third to tag the batter who tried, unsuccessfully, to stretch the hit into triple.

The score remained 1-0 until the fourth, when the Rams hit a one-out solo home run to left-center.

Both teams had chances to score in several innings but neither got the big hit.

During the home half of the sixth, Scott City used a one-out single and an error to put runners on first and second.  An infield ground-out advanced the runners one base.  With two outs a little squib was hit down the third base line.  Long knocked the ball down and threw to catcher Claire Ramsey who tagged the sliding runner for the third out,

The score was still tied heading into the 7th inning.

Hannah Scherer opened the 7th with a single up the middle.  Kenzie Graviett hit into a force out.  Maddie Graviett then hit a fly ball into right-center.  The two outfielders collided trying to make the catch and the ball fell to the ground.  Kenzie ended up at third and and Maddie wound up at second on the play that was ruled an error.  The Eagles had two in scoring position with only one out, but could only pick up one.

That run would score on an alert running play by Kenzie,

After taking a large lead, she enticed the catcher to throw to third, allowing her to steal home and give Oran the lead after 6 and a half,

The bottom of the seventh started with a single and a walk and Coach Jim Eftink decided to bring Kenzie Graviett in to pitch in relief of Tatum May.  Kenzie struck out the first batter she faced but the next hit a walk-off home run to end the game.

May went 6 innings in the circle taking the loss.  She was charged with 3 runs, all earned, allowing 5 hits.  She struck out 3 and walked 3. Kenzie went 1/3 of an inning allowing 1 run on 1 hit and struck out 1.

The Eagles only managed 3 hits, 1 each by Leah Cauble, May and Scherer.  Scherer had the only RBI.  Kenzie had a stolen base.

Oran fell to 0-1 with the loss.  They will be back in action for a baseball/softball combo on Thursday when the Eagles host Advance.  Both games start at 4:30.
