Eagles climb to .500

The Oran High School baseball team made it to the .500 mark after picking up their third straight victory on Friday against conference rival Chaffee.  The Eagles defeated the Red Devils 7-2.

Chaffee jumped out to an early 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first, off of Oran starter Layne Johnson.  A two out walk came around to score after a the next batter doubled.  That was followed by a single but a ground out ended the inning.

Oran would plate 6 in the second when they sent 10 to the plate.

Blake Overfield led off with a walk, Johnson advanced him to second with a bunt single.  Tanner McVay moved everyone 90 feet counter-clockwise when he was awarded first on a catcher's interference.

Austin Eftink picked up an RBI with a bases loaded walk,  Jacob Shoemaker did, too and Oran was up 2-1 with the bases still loaded and still no one out.  Drew Reischman then had the big hit of the game as he hit a bases clearing triple and after Cole Priggel singled him home, it was 6-1.

Johnson worked around back to back one out walks in the second.

In the third, the Devils scored once, but it could have been worse.

A lead off double was followed by a wild pitch and an RBI single.   After an error, Chaffee had runners on 1st and 3rd with no one out.  Austin Eftink fielded a bounding ground ball hit by the next batter and threw home to Clay Sauceda to gun down the lead runner and then the next two were retired.

The score was still 6-2 in the bottom of the 5th inning when, after a lead off strike out, the next batter singled and then the next reached on an error.  Reischman came in to relieve Johnson and struck out the next two to move the game into the sixth.

Oran would add an insurance run, when Priggel singled with one out, stole second, went to third on Preston Hahn's ground out and scored on a ground ball error hit by Sauceda.

The Red Devils threatened in the 7th, after back to back one out singles but a ground ball to Priggel at short was turned into a double play via Hahn and Eftink to end the game.

Johnson (2-3) got the win going 4 1/3, he gave up 2 earned runs on 5 hits, 3 walks.  He struck out 6.  Reischman earned the save, his first of the season and third of his career.  He went 2 2/3 innings gave up only 2 hits while striking out 3.
