Softball spilts on Saturday

The Oran High School softball team participated in yesterday's Neelyville Spring Swing.  They had two games.  They defeated the Naylor Eagles, gaining revenge from an earlier loss, 6-3.  Then, their late comeback fell just short in game 2 and they lost to the Portageville Bulldogs 5-4.

In game 1, Kenzie Graviett got the start for the Eagles, who were the home team on the scoreboard, and gave up a run in the top of the first.  A one out single advanced to second on a passed ball, then third on sac bunt.  She would score when the next batter singled.

Oran would tie it up in the bottom of the opening frame.  Sydney Kern hit an infield single on the first pitch she saw, she stole second and then, after two infield pop outs, scored on Tatum May's infield single, tying the game.

Graviett would give up a lead off single in the second and a one out walk, but a double play would end the threat.

The Eagles would take a lead that they would never relinquish in the third.

Maddie Graviett would single, move to second on Brianna Stause's sacrifice bunt.  Kaitlyn Streeter would walk.  After a passed ball and a stolen base, runners were on 2nd and 3rd, when Kern drove both home with her second hit of the day.

Naylor scored a lone tally in the third after a hit batter started things but after one was out, three straight singles had the bases loaded and only one down.  The Eagles were once again able to turn a double play to end the inning and escape further damage.

Oran was up 3-2 after three.

Naylor had back to back singles in the fourth after the first two batters grounded out to Kern at short, but the next batter lined out to Leah Cauble at second and the Eagles escaped again.

Stause singled to lead off the fourth.  She advanced on a wild pitch and a passed ball before finally scoring on another wild pitch.  The Eagles were up 4-2 heading into the 5th.

Naylor would trim the deficit to one during their at bat.  A one out double scored as during each of the next two at bats a wild pitch would occur allowing her to score and both batters walked.  A single would load the bases, but a third double play would bail out Oran.

The Eagles would pick up 2 insurance runs in the sixth.  Maddie Graviett had her second hit of the day, a lead off single to center to start things off.  Stause was able to get the sacrifice bunt down again to move Maddie over the second.  Kern beat out an infield single as Maddie advanced to third.  Kern stole second before Cauble had a key two out, two RBI single.

Naylor, who had scored 6 in the final inning to defeat Oran 7-3 back on April 6th, threatened in the top of the 7th.

After a lead off walk was issued, Coach Jim Eftink brought Tatum May in to pitch.  She got the next two on fly balls into the outfield.  Two singles followed however, and the go ahead run was at the plate.  A 2-2 pitch was a called a strike and the game ended as the Eagles picked up their 5th straight win.

Kenzie Graviett improved to 2-1 with her 6 inning performance.  She allow 3 runs, all earned, on 10 hits, she walked 4 and hit 1.  She struck out 3.  May picked up her first save of the season going 1 inning, no runs, 2 hits and 1 strike out.

Kern had 3 hits in 4 trips with 2 RBI and scored 2 runs.  May was 3 for 3 and had an RBI.  Cauble was 1-4 with her 2 big RBI.  Maddie Graviett was 2 for 3 with 2 runs scored.

In game 2,  Oran fell behind by 2 in the first but cut the lead in half in the second.

Jessie Long worked a one out walk, stole second and scored on the catcher's throwing error.

The Eagles were down 5-1 heading into the bottom of the seventh and the first two batters had struck out against the area's premiere pitcher, Taylor Tiffany.  But, never say die, Jessie Long singled, pinch hitter Madison Ramsey walked.   Abbie Madigan, also pinch hitting, followed with a walk.  Kenzie Graviett ripped a bases clearing double to left on the first pitch she saw and then advanced to third on the throw.  She was the potential tying run but she was stranded there as the game ended.

May took the complete game loss falling to 2-3. She gave up 5 runs, 4 earned. on 12 hits, she walked 2 and struck out 2.

Oran only managed 3 hits on the day, singles by Kern, Long and the 3 RBI double by Kenzie
Graviett.

Asst. Coach Susan Dirnberger commented on the day, "What a great day to play Softball."

"Beating Naylor 6-3 was great! We lost to them earlier in the season and this time we came ready to play. The team played a solid 7 innings and never let down."

"We lost the second game to Portageville 5-4. Keeping right even with Portageville just reassures the coaches that this team has potential. When you can stay that close to a state worthy team you are playing right. The bats got started a little late against Portageville."

With the loss, the Eagles fell to 5-4.  They will travel to Oak Ridge on Monday.  Game time is 4:30.
