The Oran High School girls softball team had suffered through the agony of three straight defeats to start the season. Yesterday they finally tasted the thrill of victory with a 10-0 mercy-rule victory over the visiting East Prairie Eagles in six innings.
Neither team scored for the first two frames.
Oran took the lead in the bottom of the third on a pair of unearned runs. Kenzie Graviett reached 2nd to lead off the inning thanks to an infield error. Two outs later she came home on an RBI single by Leah Cauble. Cauble scored on a double by Claire Ramsey.
The score was still 2-0 heading into the bottom of the 5th when the Eagles used 4 hits, an error and a sacrifice fly to push across 3 more runs and the lead was now 5-0.
In the bottom of the 6th. Oran exlpoded for 5 more runs, to end the game, on 5 more hits and another error.
Graviett got the win, tossing the first 3 innings, to improve to 1-1. She allowed no hits, no walks and struck out 3. Hannah Scherer picked up a save going the final 3. She gave up 2 hits and struck out 1.
Ramsey drove in 4, with a 2 for 3 perfomance. Cauble was 3 for 4 with 2 RBI. Jessie Long drove in a pair, also.
Lexie Davis was 2-3 and drove in a run. Scherer also picked up a couple of hits.
Assistant Coach Susan Dirnberger told the blog, "The team got off to a slow start. We did not come alive until the third inning. This is our first win and I am hopeful that this will carry over to today's game and we can get our second win."
The Eagles will host district foe Advance today at 4:30.
