For the second year in a row, the Oran High School baseball team's season ended with a loss to the Bell City Cubs in the Class 1, District 2 tournament championship game. The score yesterday was 4-1 in the game played at Advance.
The Eagles drew first blood.
Tanner McVay reached base on a throwing error to open the top of the third. Drew Mitchem moved him into scoring position at second with a perfect sacrifice bunt. McVay crossed the plate following a single to right by Austin Eftink. That was all Oran would get as a double play ended the inning.
Bell City would respond in the bottom half of the inning.
With a runner on first and one out, an error was followed by a single and another error. The Cubs had taken a 2-1 lead. The next batter doubled to drive in a third run and chased starter Layne Johnson. Drew Reischman came on in relief and got the next two.
Bell City would tack on another tally in the fifth.
A lead off single was followed by a sacrifice bunt and a two out single drove in the run.
Oran entered the seventh inning trailing 4-1 and had only managed two hits on the day, Eftink's RBI single in the third and Clay Sauceda's two out double in the fourth.
In that final frame, the first two were retired. Then, Blake Overfield worked a walk, Johnson singled to center and Tanner McVay singled just past the second baseman to load the bases. The final out was recorded, however and the Eagles season ended with a 14-9 record.
Johnson (3-5) took the loss, going 2 1/3 innings. He allowed 3 runs (0 earned) on 5 hits, 1 walk and 4 strike outs. Reischman went the final 3 2/3 He gave up 1 run, it was earned, on 4 hits. He struck out 1 and walked none.
Four Eagles played their final game in the Oran blue. They are Preston Hahn, Blake Schlitt, Overfield and McVay. The four were a part of Eagle squads that compiled a record of 68-32 and won a state championship, 2 district titles and 2 district runner up plaques. They played for three coaches, Mitch Wood, Kody Campbell and Joe Bickings. They will be missed.
