The Oran Eagles volleyball team pulled off a couple of rare feats last night. They defeated the class 3 Kennett Indians for the first time ever, they had been 0-5-1 against their conference foe. Also, they won their season-opening match for the first time since 2012 when they defeated Charleston. Last night's scores were 25-21, 20-25 & 25-23.
It was a couple of youngsters that came up big, late in game 3.
The Indians led 19-12 and looked to be in control when freshman Kaylee Payne got the serve. Kennett called time out when the Eagles had closed the score to 19-17. The momentum breaking tactic did not work, however, as Oran went on to claim a 23-19 lead before losing serve. The Indians tied the deciding game at 23 but a match-point kill by sophomore Jessie Long gave the Eagles the exciting come from behind victory in head coach's Larry Boshell's first game.
Afterward he said, "It was a great win to open the season. I thought we had a lot of energy that we sustained throughout the night. We need to execute better to be a complete team, but it is very early in the season. We will get back to work Tuesday in practice and try to build on the win."
Payne ended with 7 aces overall, Long led the team with 6 blocks and added 4 kills. Senior Brianna Stause had a team-high 6 kills. As a team they had less than a 10% service error rate.

The jv team lost in 3 sets: 11-25, 25-19,19-25. Stats for the younger team were incomplete.
The Eagles will be back in action next Monday when they host the Oak Ridge Blue Jays in a non conference match. First tip is scheduled for 6 pm.
