Junior high boys open with tourney wins

The Oran Junior High School boys basketball teams opened play today in the Scott-Mississippi Conference tournament at Scott County Central.  The 8th grade played first and won 59-15. The 7th grade picked picked up a 62-25 victory.  Both teams faced off against the hosts.

Head coach Joe Shoemaker said, "I thought both teams came out ready to play from the start. We jumped out to early leads and were able to get two wins."

The older Eagles, seeded 2nd, jumped out to 22-7 first quarter lead over the 7th seeded Braves and never looked back.

Ty Johnson led the way for Oran, now 10-3, with 25.  He was 5-7 from the lane.  Dane Shands had 19 and Kaleb Gosche scored 10.  Waylon Shaffer and Drew Smith both added 4.  Gage Phillips and Keaton Stepp played.

As a team they were only 6 of 19 at the free throw line for 32%.

The 8th grade will play Monday at 8:15 pm.  They will take on the 3rd seeded Scott City Rams.

The 7th grade team, seeded third,  also built a large lead, 24-3, after 1 and they too cruised of Scott County Central.  The Braves had the 6th seed.

Nine Eagles broke into the scoring column.  Seth Cauble scored 16, including 2-2 on free tosses.  Nick Romas and Samuel Shoemaker each hit for 12 apiece.  Landon Cochran and Kolten Payne both had 6.  The trio of Parker Diebold, Robbie Menz and Camdyn Triblett chipped in a duece.  Nic Massey added a single tally.

Landon Avery, Ryan Burke and Connor Gage played, but did not score.

The younger boys were 5 of 11 at the charity stripe for 45%.

They too improved to 10-3 and will also play Monday.  They will take on the #2 seeded Kelly Hawks at 5:45 pm.
