Girls hammer Hawks

The Oran High School girls basketball teams picked up a pair of conference road wins last night at Kelly.  The junior varsity won 54-40 while the varsity prevailed 64-31 in the nightcap.

During the opener, the younger girls, who were coming off a dismal performance Monday at Chaffee, didn't look much better.  An 11-9 first quarter lead turned into a 20-18 half-time deficit.

During the second half, however, the Eagles, despite having only 6 players, threw on a full-court press.  The defense sparked the offense and Oran flew ahead 39-29 heading into the final 7 minutes and cruised to the 14 point win.

Coach Ethan Evans told the blog, "The JV did a good job coming out and hitting shots after halftime. The 3rd quarter was probably our best offensive quarter all year. I was happy with their effort bouncing back from the Chaffee game."

Madison Ramsey led Oran with 17.  She hit 5 from beyond the arc.  Taylor Lowes nailed 3 bombs in her 13 tallies.  Katelyn Streeter also hit a trey and she finished with 11.

Savannah Below had 9 on the evening, and she too hit 1 from distance. Paige Bradley and Heather Gosche both had 2 apiece as every Eagle scored during the contest.

Oran hit a total of 10 three-pointers.  They were 8-20 from the line for 40%.  The team is now 6-1 overall and 2-1 in league play.  They will be off until next Thursday when Oran travels to Charleston for a conference showdown.

The varsity squad started out slow but then took over.

Kaylee Payne hit a trey about halfway through the first period to give the Eagles a 9-8 lead and they never trailed again.

The lead was only 3 after 1, 13-10 but a 27-7 second quarter put the game on ice and Oran enjoyed the mercy-rule clock through most of the final frame.

Evans said, "We got off to a slow start in the 1st quarter missing some free throws and easy layups that we usually make. The 2nd quarter we finally got it going, but to beat good teams going forward we will need to start quicker."

Leah Cauble led the way with 28.  She hit 2 from beyond the arc, was 10-12 from the line and had 4 steals.  Payne was right behind with a career-high 23.  She also had 2 long-range bombs, grabbed 7 boards and dished out a team-high 5 assists.

Jessie Long just missed a double-double with 9 points, including 3 of 4 on free throws and a team-leading 8 boards.  Brianna Stause hit a three and a free throw for her 4 points.  She led the team with 5 steals.

Kenzie Graviett and Claire Ramsey played, but neither scored.

Overall, the Eagles were 16-29 from two (55.2%) and 5-16 from three (31.2%). From the free throw line. they were 17-26 for 65.4%.

The varsity improved to 17-1 and 4-0.

They will participate in the Coaches vs. Cancer Shootout Saturday at Charleston when they take on the Naylor Eagles at 6 pm.  More information on the event is located in this post.
