Softball loses on the road

The Oran High School girls softball team dropped a heartbreaker on the road last Friday, falling to Twin Rivers 6-5 in eight innings.

The Lady Eagles drew first blood, scoring two in the top of the first.  Kaylee Payne walked to lead-off, Leah Cauble was hit by a pitch to put two on. Claire Ramsey, in her first appearance of the season, singled to right to drive in both of the speedsters.  Jessie Long would follow with a walk.  With two outs Katelyn Streeter also drew a walk, but Oran would score no more in the first.

In the second, Payne and Cauble singled and Ramsey reached on an error but Payne was thrown out at home trying to score.  Cauble reached third.  Mallory Lowes ran for Ramsey and stole second.  Long drove those two in on a sharp single to left. The Eagles led 4-0 after an inning and a half.

The Lady Royals made some noise in their part of the second.  A leadoff single was followed by a home run, to cut the margin in half, off of Alyssa Spane.  Spane came in relief of Samantha Welter, who started, after the first two had reached.

The score remained unchanged until the fifth.  Long doubled with one out and went to third on Welter's single.  Long scored on Rylee Boshell's ground out to the right side.

Twin Rivers tied it up in the sixth.  They used a one-out walk, an error, another walk, a single and a two-out single to knot the score at five.

Oran was retired in order in the top of the seventh.

The Royals wasted a lead-off double in the bottom of the seventh.  The next batter was intentionally walked.  After a successful sacrifice, Twin Rivers had runners on at second and third with only one down, but Spane recorded a strikeout and induced a line drive to Welter at third to get out of the inning and prolong the game.

Oran wasted a lead-off double of it's in the eighth.  Welter hit the ball to the base of the left field fence to start the frame but she would be stranded there.

The Lady Royals would not waste an eighth-inning double to start things.  This time, Oran pitched to the next batter and Spane notched a strikeout.  Then an intentional walk was given, but a hit batsman loaded the bases.  A sharply hit ground ball past the drawn-in infield would allow the winning run to score.

Coach Jim Eftink said, "We had a four to nothing lead and let it get away. Got to give Twin Rivers a lot of credit. They scratched and clawed their way back and took us down in the bottom of the eighth."

He added, "Jessie had a really good game.  I think she had a couple of hits and a couple of rbi. She hit the ball hard in all of her at bats! Swinging with authority."

Long and Welter each had two hits.  Payne, Cauble and Ramsey had the only other safeties.  Ramsey had two driven in as well.  Boshell had the other RBI.

Spane (0-2) took the loss going seven and one-third.  She allowed six runs, five earned on nine hits.  She walked seven and struck out five.
