Softball wins first

The Oran High School girls softball team used a nine-run sixth inning to post a 12-6 comeback win over previously undefeated East Carter County at home on Saturday.

The Lady Redbirds jumped out to a 5-0 lead in the second off of Kaylee Payne, who was seeing her first action in the circle. They sent 10 to the plate and used a pair of singles, two walks, an error, a couple of fielder's choices and two bunts to plate the runs.

Oran got three back in the third.  Payne doubled with one out. Leah Cauble walked and Claire Ramsey was hit by a pitch.  Payne and Cauble crossed on Samantha Welter's two-out single.  Lydia Tankersly, who had run for Ramsey, reached third.  She scored on Katelyn Streeter's base hit.

East Carter got one back in the fourth with a leadoff single, a stolen base and two infield groundouts.

The score remained 6-3 until the Lady Eagles batted in the sixth when they sent 13 to the plate and scored nine.

Payne doubled with one out, Cauble followed with a single, Ramsey was hit by a pitch again, Long doubled and Welter was hit.  Rylee Boshell singled with two outs, Taylor Lowes walked, Alyssa Spane singled.  Payne in her second at bat of the inning tripled and Cauble singled again.

Payne finished with three hits, two doubles and a triple.  She had two RBI.  She went the distance in the circle picking up the win.  She allowed six runs, three earned on seven hits.  She walked three and struck out four.

Cauble, Long, Boshell and Spane each had two hits. Cauble, Welter, Boshell and Spane each had a pair of runs driven in.

Coach Jim Eftink said, "Big comeback win! We needed that one too. Didn’t want to start the season 0 and 3. Kaylee came through for us on the mound. After they scored big in the second inning she held them in check the rest of the way.  Hope we can carry the momentum into our Delta game this week."

Oran improved to 1-2 and will host Delta tomorrow at 4:30 pm.
