Lady Eagles dump Devils

The Oran High School girls basketball teams picked up a pair of conference wins last night over Highway 77 rival, Chaffee.  The junior varsity won 41-24, while the varsity blew open a tight game and cruised past the She-Devils 93-48.  For the older girls, it was also an impressive district victory over a top-three opponent.

With last week's inclement weather, neither team had played a game in over a week and it showed early.

During the opener, the junior varsity took a couple of minutes to get going but held a 10-2 lead after one and was up 27-7 at the intermission.

The Eagles' lead was 41-13 heading into the final seven minutes.  Chaffee outscored Oran 11-0 to finish out the game.

Coach Ethan Evans said, "After the first 3 minutes the girls picked it up and really started knocking down shots and playing good defense."

Katie Webb led a balanced scoring attack with a game-high 12 points in only two quarters of action.

Savannah Below and Taylor Lowes had nine apiece.  Lowes hit three from beyond the arc.  Mallory Lowes scored eight and she had two treys.  Paige Bradley, Kennedi McVay and Heather Gosche had two points apiece.

The team hit 8 of 17 from the line for 47%.

The younger Eagles improved to 1-0 in league play and 5-0 overall.

In the nightcap, the game was reminiscent of the one two years ago (a link to that post is here) as Chaffee held an early lead but the Eagles were up one after one, 20-19.

But unlike that previous game, whatever was said during the huddle before the second stanza started, worked and worked well.  Oran outscored the Devils 65-23 during the next 16 minutes of action, putting the game on ice on its way to the 45 point shellacking.

Coach Evans told the blog, "What a great job the girls did in the middle 2 quarters. We were a little flat in the 1st but I knew the pace was in our favor."

Leah Cauble outscored the visitors on her own as she netted 49 points.  She was 5-7 from beyond the arc and 14-17 from the free-throw line.   She led the team with seven rebounds and four assists.  Kaylee Payne, who is still not 100% after her injury, added 12 points.  She was a perfect 4-4 from the floor including 2-2 from beyond the arc and was also 2-2 from the line, and led the team with five steals.  Jessie Long had 11 points and Katelyn Streeter chipped in 10, including two treys.

Madison Ramsey hit two 3s for her six points and Webb had five to round out the scoring.

Claire Ramsey had three assists and three steals for an Eagle team that won it's 17th straight Scott-Mississippi Conference game.

The girls shot 18-23 for 73% from two and 11-18 from three for a phenomenal 61%.  At the line, they were 24 of 31 for 77%.

It was the second time the two teams had met this season.  The previous was in the championship game of the Lady Devil Invitation, which the Eagles won by five.  That post is here.

They are now 2-0 and 11-3.

The Lady Eagles will be back in action on Thursday when they host another conference-foe Kelly at 6 pm.
